Anatomy of a follow-up

Most students prepare for the first answer. Practise these 3 probe types.

Layer 1· Reasoning probe

Examiner“Why do you think that?”

Recovery“The main reason is…”

Layer 2· Anti-script probe

Memorisers fail

Examiner“Which of those three is most useful?”

Recovery“I think the most useful is… because…”

Layer 3· Hypothetical probe

Examiner“What would you do in that situation?”

Recovery“If I were in that situation, I would…”
